International Baccalaureate® (IB)
We have started our IB journey about three years ago when we visited an IB charter school in Allentown. We were in search for a model for our high school application. We taught IB would be the best avenue for us because we serve a transient community, our mission is aligned with the mission of IB, and IB brings prestige to the program.
Here is IB's mission:
“The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.”
IB is offered to students aged 3 to 19 to help develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. Founded in 1968, IB currently works with 4,069 schools in 143 countries to develop and offer four challenging programmes. 1575 schools in US are offering IB which makes US one of the biggest and fastest growing market in the world. There are only 26 IB world schools in PA and there are only 4 charter schools offering IB.
IB has reputation for high quality education sustained for over 40 years. It encourages international-mindedness in IB students. To do this, they believe that students must first develop an understanding of their own cultural and national identity. They ensure that their programmes are accessible to students in a wide variety of schools—national, international, public and private—through their unique relationship with IB World Schools worldwide.
