Why is YSCP pursuing PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME (PYP)?
Our Board gave us the direction to pursue PYP after we became the only International Baccalaureate (IB) World School when we were approved in the Spring of 2017 for Middle Years Programme (MYP). It is important to know why we are even considering to become a PYP school in the first place.
Here is a not-exhaustive list:
1. YSCP’s existing program and mission aligns very well with IB.
2. The IB program well suits the transient communities like State College as it offers a continuum of international education.
3. Higher level of rigor and organization of curriculum horizontally and vertically that addresses all state and charter mandated curriculum with a holistic approach.
4. PYP is research based and has been tested and proven to be successful.
5. PYP is very well aligned with Common Core, as a matter of fact developers of Common Core studied IB programs and integrated IB philosophies and approaches to Common Core.
6. Social, emotional and whole child development in addition to rigorous academic development.
7. YSCP is a Middle Years Programme (MYP) IB World School. PYP provides the best preparation of the students to the MYP and to 21st century skills.
8. Best practice from a range of curricula: Unlike a national/state curriculum, IB programs reflect the best practice of a range of different educational frameworks and curricula. It encourages students to be internationally-minded and to think beyond their immediate environment.
9. PYP’s focus is international mindedness and global focus which are essential for a well rounded education for our students which also matches our charter’s mission.
10. PYP programme is built on the constructivist approach which is surrounded around inquiry as a whole rather than bits and pieces reflected in other programs.
11. PYP plans for reflective, higher order and critical thinking skills for all learners.
12. IB learner profile is a set of attributes that is common to all IB programmes which provides a vision for our students when they leave our school.
13. Vision is that today is different than yesterday and tomorrow will be different than today. It is predicated on the fact that that kids preparing for tomorrow need a different approach.
14. PYP requires all staff to be trained and continuously reflective of their practices for continuous improvement. PYP is a process and educators are never done.
15. IB students often perform better: IB World School students develop strong academic, social and emotional characteristics. They are also likely to perform well academically – often better than students in other programs.
